Now that spring is here, we won’t be far off from summer parties where everyone is in light clothes and jewellery is more easily seen and actively displayed. But for some folk, the idea that you only wear jewellery on sunny summer days is a very strange one.
No self-respecting biker will leave their gear at home when out on the road, nor confine days on two wheels to those occasions when the sun shines and the flags are cracking. Those in the know will find some of the best days on a bike can be on a cold, crisp spring or autumn day.
Of course, being exposed to the weather comes with a cost. You don’t want to get soaked to the skin, since hypothermia is not very cool, (except in the literal sense that can kill you). But it’s not just your clothes that need to be waterproof and breathable.
Stainless steel chains and other jewellery avoid the problem that might be faced by people wearing other kinds of jewellery in all weathers, as some metals will tarnish in such conditions.
It is this very resistance to corrosion and tarnishing that allows stainless steel to be used so readily for so many things. After all, when you ride home after a day on the bike, you will probably be using stainless steel knives, forks and spoons to eat your tea. They can go through the dishwasher or washing up bowl thousands of times and still look good as new.
So, yes, you will see lots of folk flashing their rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings and much else this summer, glinting in the sun as they look nice in fair weather. But for things to wear in all weathers, be it a warm sunny afternoon or a cold wet day when only the tough venture outside, only stainless steel will do.
